I had an original Mills "Jack in the box" years ago. It was set up to operate with a cable system wound up on a shaft and a friction brake that would lower the slot down automatically if you pressed a tiny button on the side. The cover was not hinged, but free to slide in the back when slot machine was "up". You pulled the cover up and then over/down to cover the top hole. It had a Mills key on the side or front as I remember. It used a hexagon crank to lift machine up to the locked position. The top lid had a glued on paper that stated "Mills jack in the box" and had instructions on it.
