Mills Silent FOK

Postby damikeguy » Sun Jul 26, 2015 2:07 pm

It's a fantastic find or me. Mostly complete. Just need to find back door with lock, front lock, cash box and instruction cards. It's going to need a lot of work. It's but ugly now. I did find over $20.00 in coins, three casino chips, three war nickels, two buffalo nickels and these two silver dollars. Someone put a bug on the only working jackpot symbol on the first reel and wired up the jackpot just in case. Not to bad for $400.00 This will keep me out of trouble for a wile. I still love the hunt. :D

Nice find DaMikeGuy! How ironic, I just picked one up today--I wasn't going to post it to follow that sweet Caille, but mine is original never molested in any way. It has mint fortune telling reel strips, original paint, original stenciling on the cabinet, original decals on both sides (first time for me although we settled that debate a long time ago), and of course the mint venders. When I played it, found the payoffs were set for future pay even though there's no indicator of such. I haven't checked, but assume the original token separator is present as well. Ummm, I gave up a little more than $400 though, so they are both awesome finds.

Thanks for the kind mention of the sweet Caille. And envious of your finds as well! The hunt is definitely why many of us do this. And by the way, I have an older Mills FOK single JP missing that front casting lock. If you find a source for the lock, please share.

I believe the back door for a FOK is longer than a regular Mills. Correct?

Back door definitely longer by about an inch on the older Mills FOK and the FOK single JP (shown). Not sure about the Silent FOK.

All the Mills F.O.K.'s back doors all are taller by about 3/4" of an inch goose neck and silent, the cabinets are 3/4" taller to allow for the mint vender dispensing mechanism, also under the coin box there are two strips of wood to raise the coin box up closer to the mech base, the cash box door if there is one is also taller.

both the back door and the front casting lock are very hard to come by and quite pricey when the do come up.

There is an alternative to the back door if you have the skill, I have done this very successfully, take a standard door cut it and add a strip of sheet metal the correct thickness to it, first put the door on the cabinet to measure for the exact amount you will need to add, next if you have a band saw use that if not use a jig saw and a straight edge, the straighter the cut the better, cut the bottom of the door about 1-1/4" from the bottom, grind all paint off the two pieces to be welded, tack the door to your work bench making sure the both pieces of the door are were they need to be, then start stitch welding the filler strip, don't do a continuous weld or you will over heat the metal and it will warp, go back and connect your welds after stitch welding, grind down your welds, test fit your door, use hammer and dolly to make any corrections to properly fit the door, than you can use automotive body filler to blend in the repair, heavy build primer helps in filling in the small pin holes and imperfections, some doors have an inner rail that you will need to address as well.

If your skills are not up to the task there are plenty of body shops around, you should be able to find one to at least do the welding for you if you do the prep work first for short money, look for a beat up door you can pick one up for short money and if it is bent straighten it before cutting it, if you take your time both inside and outside it will look seamless

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice and the pictures of some nice machines. I will try and find a lock to modify for the front casting. I can fab up a back door from an old Castle Front door I have if needed. I am in no big hurry. I will keep on searching for the original parts for now. If I come up with a modified lock that works I will get back with you. I anyone comes across a back door or front casting lock I am in the market.
Thanks again

If anyone can take a photo of that front casting lock it would help me with fabrication or modifying something for now.
