I find this thread ironic for my own reasons. I decided I will one day have a .50 cent machine and need to start collecting now. So I went to the bank and asked. Of course they gave a bunch away yesterday but someone did drop off these and they had no idea what to do with them. Yes I bought them. Just in case I find a Machine like this Extraordinary one day. Rick
Those eisenhower's are getting tough to come by . Don't know why none of them have been taken out of circulation by the mint ,that I am aware of .People just seem to like to hoard them . I always ask for them at the bank one time the teller gave me a silver dollar for one buck wasn't an Ike but hey I didn't complain !

First, Hello to all !
2nd , took me 4 banks to get my 50 coins. was told "they been picked through already" = ????. they ment... old folks turned them in , in rolls ,others already took them pulled all the silver ones out & returned the rest. I hate Scrappers !!!"
Dollar coins are harder to find.

3rd , On higher denomination coins by Mills ; in their "operators' manuals" ,with all the parts listed with the prices, early 1930s they do mention 50 cent related parts. in the 1940s very little if any mention , And in the 1950s NO mention what so ever. And never any mention of a DOLLAR coin anything ....at any time. One would assume that all of this would be the other way around.
How many people were walking around in the 1930s with 50 cent coins in their pockets to waist in a slot machine ????

my "1931" Roman Head, the base plate is MLB coded & stamped 50 cent. As Freddy stated, these were bought up big time by the British to convert. as mine was. even with the mills 50 cent parts, many parts still need to be modified a little for their coins. British "operators bought the mills 50 cent & mills dime machines for these conversions.

4th , I doubt the dollar version (on google images) was made by mills.

A vast majority of the Nevada casinos had "work shops" ,usually in the basement or in the back, to fix any issue, to convert machines (brand new) before hitting the floor. fill in winning holes...., add additional holes for "mystery" payouts..., change the reel strips to match, ect.

Now, on the machine that started this all; I see nothing wrong with it, Would love to own it. but the casting for the coin entry is not "U.S. mills", was used in England & converted to take U.s. coins.... which decreases it's overall Value.

now, someone might pony up the money for it today.

Hi Guy's,
I just wanted to clear up, the question about the origins of the Mills Extraordinary that you show, that machine was built by The Mills Novelty Company in Chicago for their British distributor-The Samson Novelty Company, it is NOT a British conversion, Here in the U.S it should be treated as a VERY RARE MODEL, to verify this, I am attaching an add for the machine in the British trade paper, and a picture of these machines in the Samson Novelty showroom. the add in the trade paper shows clearly the coin entry in question, I am sure this will answer any questions relating to this mode. Many years ago, I bought the scrapbooks on The Samson Novelty Company that was kept by the late Harry Hollaway, brother of John Hollaway founder of The Samson Novelty Company who was the Official European distributor for Mills from 1928 till 1935.

Hey Freddy:
Thanks for the great info, regarding the Mills "Extraordinary", and the Samson Novelty Co.
That really clears the air in this discussion. Although not a fan of using the word 'RARE', it
is definitely a very scarce and collectable machine, here in the U.S. I did notice on the page
with the Samson showroom, that the coin entry and badging were not drawn onto all of the
artists conceptions of the "Extraordinary". Especially the top of the one in the left foreground.
Even though they do get much of the intricate detail on most machines, that's the disadvantage
of not having a true photograph.

Thanks again Freddy !!!
but as stated by the seller, 50 cent machine, & plays & pays as it should....... then it was converted to U.S. coins After British use. which lessens the "rarity"..... or desirability (to some).

Interesting! Here is yet another 'Head Design' for the French 1shilling "Extraordinary".
Coin entry on the left, and a return in the center, close to where the coin entry for the English 1d version is located.
Apparently it was no problem for Samson to make so many different upper castings, just for coin-size configurations.
All of the U.S. castings are the same, with only the bore of the coin size hole being different, with the exception of
the 50c version, being in the center section.
As much as I have focused on how many machine variations that all manufacturers made over the years, it has now
been catching my attention more, as to how many small detail changes I had overlooked before. This does not mean
a casting change for a feature, as in jackpots, venders, gold award, etc. It is the ever-so-slight difference in a small
part of a design. This is not just in Slot Machines, but Trade Stimulators, and other counter games as well. Just from
what I have seen, you could put together a small book on the subject.
