Removing top layer of paint without harming bottom layer

Postby Rick-okc » Fri May 22, 2015 7:51 am

Guys, I need your advise.
I'm working on an old slot. I want to paint the highlight areas on the front castings a gold color and then paint the whole casting red and remove the red paint from the gold highlight areas. The highlight areas are too big and intricate to mask off.
I was wondering if I could put one coat of gold paint down, let it dry good, maybe coat it with something, and then put the second coat (red) down and wipe off the red from the gold highlight areas.
I tried putting a coat of varnish over the gold, sprayed the red and started wiping it off with a rag and some diesel fuel I had on hand. That didn't work.
How would you guys do this?

Hi There,
first what type slot castings are you trying to paint?
are they raw castings?
are they Plated castings?
This will give me an idea on direction!

thanks Dave

I know this sounds silly, but on very intricate details, I often use the old Elmers school glue. I will coat whatever I don't want the paint to stick to (so long as it is metal or glass) and then let it dry. Apply the paint carefully, and then either peel it off before the paint dries, or well after, so you don't pull off half-dried paint too.

Post a pic of what you are working on, and that will give us a better picture.

Thanks guys for the fast responses.
The machine I'm working on is an Extrabell.
The castings are currently raw and recently bead blasted.
Here's a couple of pics.

Talking to my friend, Jeff Frahm, he suggested I polish the highlights on the castings to a nice shinny finish, paint the castings red, remove the paint from the highlights with lacquer thinner, then spray the castings with a translucent gold finish. I'm trying that now. Hope to be done in a day or so.
