Mills DIAL restoration

Postby Rick-okc » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:24 pm

I think I know the answer, but I'm going to ask anyway.

I've started working on a Mills DIAL.
It's in need of a total restoration.
The mechanism is filthy and has light surface rust of just about everything.
I'm also finding a lot of parts are frozen but come loose with a bit of cleaning.
It looks to me that the entire mech needs to be taken apart and every part cleaned.
I just bought a copy of OWNER'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE MILLS Q.T. SLOT MACHINE.
Excellent book, but it doesn't have any information concerning the DIAL, as to parts or function.
Does anyone have or know of a supplement to the prior mentioned book that would cover the DIAL.
I'm assuming the basic mech is the same as a QT but without the coin payout parts and the added DIAL parts.
Looking closely at the book, I'm slowly identifying the DIAL parts.
Since the mech was so gummed up, it wouldn't work, so I'm having to guess function as I go.

If anyone knows anything about the DIAL, I would love to have someone to occasionally ask questions or maybe supply a detailed photo or two.
I do know another collector that is working on his DIAL, and I think he's in the same boat as me.
Once I get this thing all cleaned up and working properly, I wouldn't mind writing a supplement for later collectors if there isn't anything out there.

I have completed the cabinet.
Here's a picture of it.

Whoa I can't help you with the question but what a great job on the cabinet! You should post a before photo of the mech too!

Cool machine, I got one once that had some rust in it too but I did not have a bead blaster. I went to harbor freight and bought an AIR ERASER for about $30 bucks. It looks like an air brush but instead of paint you fill it with real fine aluminum oxide that comes with it and it is a cool tool for small parts and fine work. Do it outside that abrasive and rust goes everywhere.

Should my dial free play when it has points? - mine reverses, but takes a point away when played with a nickel

The machine should not accept coins when there are points on the dial.

I'm curious.
Any collectors near the south central Tennessee area that has a DIAL?

One last plea for help!
Does anyone have a Mills DIAL and a pretty good knowledge of it's operation?
I think I have about 90% of it figured out.
I'd love to find someone I can ask a few questions and run some thought past to fully understand this machine.
I'm in the process of writing a DIAL supplement to go with "The Complete Guide to the Mills Q.T.” and could use all the help I can get.
Once it's complete, I'll be posting it for everyone to download for FREE.

That is a very interesting machine. I don't understand the function of the dial. Does one accumulate points and get a payout?
