Need advice please

Postby d12bn » Wed Sep 21, 2016 7:31 am

This is the track for my U Select It. It holds the candy. It's grimy, has paint and some rust on it. Wondering if it could be sandblasted? Sanding by hand would take too long. Maybe a chemical treatment? I need to get it prepared for paint. It holds the candy and I want it clean and presentable. What do you think?

White vinegar works as well as Evaporust and it's a Hell of a lot cheaper.

I'm making progress and time to start the track cleaning. I tried Vinegar on other parts and it works on rust but not paint. Don't like the idea of acid. Evaporust is expensive and don't think it removes paint.
Any other suggestions? A spray on chemical that you could hose off would be ideal

Thanks in advance

Looks to be zinc plated. If you wash with in dove liquid it will remove all of the yak but leave the rust and not hurt the zinc plating. You want to clean this on the alkaline side hence the dove. While vinegar is acidic (pH around 5) you will still remove the zinc and get flash rusting. This should be done in a small tank heated up about 140F. If you use a stronger alkaline cleaner (higher caustic) you can remove the rust but it will eventually also attack the zinc plating and move into the flash rust issues. Dove liquid is the old tried and true fall back cleaner used in plating shops. Remember remove the soil first and then deal with the rust.
