Giepen Skill Cards Wood Replacement

Postby tspang80 » Sat Jan 21, 2017 8:26 pm

Hello all,
I recently purchased a Skill Cards trade stimulator and I had a question on replacing the wood. The current wood is a plywood with a veneer. I am wanting to replace it with real wood.
My question is, will this lower the value and should I leave it original?
Thank you for any comments.

It looks very clean and I assume original, why redo it?

It just feels cheap to me and I thought real wood would look better?

I have had one of these games for years, and it is super-fun to play. Rather simple, but fun. Not sure who dreamed up the Giepen name.
This machine, was made by Auto-Bell Novelty around 1957, which is a follow-up of the original Atlas Games "Tilt Test" from 1947, which
carried the model through to 1957, with a slight case change, using the same exact Formica covered wood case design.
Although not as impressive looking as earlier games, it is best to leave this machine in it's original state. By making any case changes would
ruin it's collector value. This one is in nice original condition, so just enjoy it.
There are two of these on eBay at present. The first asking insane money, at $1,599.99, and the other, equally insane at $1,299.99 Where
do people come up with these prices? The realistic value range for this model, would be more in the $350 to $550 range, depending on condition.
Hopefully you are in that range with yours.

Thank you all for the replays.
I purchased mine for a little more than your price range, but I saw one go for 700$ on eBay so I'm happy with the price I paid.
I never plan to sell it, but it will be passed down to my daughter someday.

Ron Kieth's trade stimulator list shows this machine as a 1936 A.B.T. Skill Cards, no Giepen name mentioned.

Is Ron's list incorrect?

Yes, Ron's list is incorrect on this item. It is definitely not A.B.T., or anywhere near 1936.
The photo is from an earlier VCA Auction, which most likely had all the wrong info listed.
Sorry Ron. Now you can move it to it's correct location.
