Indeed -- it's function is to keep the handle from 'snapping back' to it's upright position after a play. I would think that would be annoying, if nothing else. Kinda like hitting a pothole with bad shocks . . . . . . nelson
won't kill anything, just makes the action smother & quieter.... hence the silent goose necks of the early 1930's. easy to find for sale & not much $$.
