Working on a Sega 5c escalator (from a Sixties-era Diamond Star).
Can anyone enlighten me as to the function of this piece?

From your picture I can only assume that Sega made a change on the escalator as the Mills version had a magnet in the area shown that would catch slugs as shown in the pictures below and that magnet also acted as a point of contact to direct a real coin in the proper direction of travel and without the magnet located there the piece you show seems to be used to direct coin travel in replacement of the magnet!

That is a coin divertor to allow coins other than US Nickels to be inserted. The magnet to pull out Canadian nickels needed to be removed and the divertor would kick the coins down to the sensing finger. Without the piece the coins could eventually jam the escalator because of improper seating of the coins in the escalator.

OK -- so here's a foto of the escalator with the faceplate unattached and moved to the right:


Without 'diverter' A (sketched in black), nickels get relegated to the slugbox (white path).
Note there is also a 'diverter' B to keep the nickel moving in the correct direction (red path).
Note the section circled in orange on the faceplate, looks like it was cut out at some point.
The word 'gulden' appears on the award card -- perhaps this machine was originally a European slot later converted to nickels after it came across the pond?
