How hard to pull?

I finally bought my first slot machine after months of searching. It's a Mills high top Jewel. I'm surprised and a little disappointed in how hard it is to pull the handle. Can something be adjusted to make it easier? I think it's normal because the seller had 3 Mills Jewels and I tried all of them and they felt similar.

Thanks

There is a long spring on the mech with two hooks. The hooks are adjustable. Take the hook off the upper peg keeping the pork chop from moving down and see how far below the peg the top of the hook is from the bottom of the peg. It should be no more than 1/8" space between the bottom of the peg to the upper bend of the hook. If it is ove 1/8" then adjust the hook out till it closes the gap. Many times the previous owner / operator made the tension greater to correct a problem by causing another like the reset on the escalator would not work when the tension on the main spring was reduced. If this occurs when you adjust the spring then in most cases the tab along side the vertical finger reset needs to be lubed and or adjusted to allow the pork chop to be released which also then allows the escalator to reset. Try it and see what happens. You can always put it back the way it was.

Thanks for the info. Is this the spring?

NO. It's on the handle side of the mech.

My Pace is the same way and I'm guessing that it's probably normal for a big mechanical. If you take the mechanism out of the case and ratchet the pull lever through the stops, you can see that the pull is resisted at every step by a lot of very heavy springs. All these mechanisms are preloaded with the energy of your pull against the springs and then latched in place so that all that potential energy can be released in sequence when you reach the bottom of the pull. Amazing!

My Pace is a few years newer than your Mills, but the mechanism is similar.

Mine is also very noisy as it cycles. Anyway mine's been in use for maybe 60 years so it was probably built to take it.
