Excited to dig into my first restore project. Castings get bead blasted tomorrow and will start full tear down of the mech.

Thankful for this forum and Dave's videos as resources - it is unlikely I would have tried this without any outside help.

HI Here is a photo of one that I did last year. Good luck.

You will find that it's actually fun to dig into these machines. Once you complete the first one, you'll be itching to dig into the next.

I have done several and find that the glass is almost universally discolored or damaged, so I routinely use acrylic plastic for the windows. I have a laser that cuts plastic, so I can fit them perfectly and can use various thicknesses of plastic to do the job.

You can bead-blast the mechanism parts that are rusted to remove all that discoloration and rust, and give the parts a shot of automotive clearcoat to bring a suitable luster to the parts.

And a buffing wheel will be your best friend aside from the bead blast tank.

Lots of detailed pictures before and after are always nice to see.

Bead blasting completed. I plan to polish the burst rays and other non-painted parts. Should the rest of the casting be buffed out at all or is it ready to go straight to paint?

Just buff the high parts then paint the castings. The handle and the center cherry is chrome plated then painted.

Also the handle hub is chrome.

I'm ready to paint the castings. I've sanded and polished all of the high points. Question on the sun bursts - the bursts are unpainted but between them will be painted. I don't think there is a simple way to mask each ray. Do I just paint over them and then go back and sand the paint off of the rays? If so, what grit is sufficient to remove paint?
