Go to the shop ... write them a check ... get the machine and then stop payment on the check because it was a stolen item.
That should work ...

Be careful if you do this. Some places will convert the check to an electronic check and it will clear before you exit the premises.

You by law cannot take this machine back. Your family member sold it and if you have no report of it being stolen you cannot do a thing. Besides the police need to pick it up and return it to you after a report would have been made. Writing bad checks in some places can be a Felony and they do not care how you tell them it came about.
