Okay -- so the group was way off on the final price of the Caille Roulette. I didn't venture a guess since I'm a relative novice compared to most of you and didn't have a clue. I can guess what an old pin and most common slots are worth but beyond that I'm in uncharted territory. But I never expected $210,000 for the Roulette. And the bid jumped in the middle of bidding from 42,000 to 200,000 -- what's up with that? I know bidders will up the required bid to stave off competition, but that's a hefty jump. And the bid was topped by 10,000!

Is this a case of a couple of "rogue" bidders or a true indication of the "value" of the machine.

Hello Friendly:
Yes you did see correctly. My eyes took to a blur when it miraculously
jumped to $200,000. That's because the person that came there after it,
did not want to watch each step of the ladder, and blurted out his figure.
Apparently two persons had the same thing in mind. :o

Oh, by the way, when I entered my guess at $130,000, with a possible
top of $145,000, I was forgetting that this was a quarter Roulette, which
there are not many of. Most are Nickel. Even the Peerless models. Well
anyway, the final bid got my attention. Bill

Why anyone would not want to buy whatever they are bidding on for as little as possible is beyond me. Good thing it was a quarter machine and not something really rare like an English Penny machine. Sounds like whoever bought it was on some kind of head trip. It will be interesting to hear from some of the people who actually attended this auction to find out what really happened.

And presumably, assuming that he (or she) wasn't bidding against himself (or herself), the strategy of jumping the bid all the way to $200,000 didn't even succeed, in that there weas a subsequent bid of $210,000!

Out of curiosity, was this a record for a slot machine? As I noted before, I'm srtill somewhat new to the field, but this price seemed to take everyone by surprise, so I'm wondering whether we all "saw" a bit of history being made ...

Winner of Guess the Caille Contest

Postby Dave » Sun Apr 17, 2005 9:14 pm

Well, I just got home from racing (took 3rd in 1 race and 2nd in the other ).

It looks like we have two winners in the contest.

I believe WatlingBoy and Dave (me) both selected < 150K but more then 140K. :wav:

True, we underestimated by over $60,000 but hey, a win is a win \:D/

I look forward to hearing about how the auction went from the people who were actually there.

Regarding this being a record price for a slot machine, to my knowledge it is.

Let me clarify some of what happened at the auction. It did not jump form $45,000 to $200,000. It may have looked like that on the internet but that was not what happened. Here is how it went. It opened for $50,000, auctioneer asked for and got $100,000. He then asked for $125,000. By this time you had 3 or 4 hands in the air bidding. One guy was trying to bid $150,000 but another guy was bidding at the same time and it jumped him to $175,000. It stayed here for a few seconds, a guy on the floor bidding for someone on the other end of a cell phone pushed it to $200,000. It looked like it was done at $200,000. The auctioneer asked for $210,000. It looked like no takers. After about 15 or 20 seconds the other floor bidder made the half signal bidding $205,000. The man bidding for the phone bidder let it go and it sold for $205,000. It never made it to $210,000. Because the buyer was taking delivery out of state he only had to pay the 10% buyers premium. Final price $225,500. The double brought $135,000 plus juice and a musical Caille Puck brought $32,500 plus.
