How to post pictures with your COCA Classified Ad

Postby Dave » Wed May 10, 2006 12:00 pm

If you want to associate a picture with your classified ad on the COCA web site then simply put the following code in your description:

Removed per COCA's request

I just tried it with the Regina Music Box that was just listed and it works! :D

If you don't have a web server to store the picture just email it to me and I will put it up on mine and then email you the URL if you also advertise the machine that you want to buy/sell here.

Of course, if you mention that more information about your machine is available at www.IBuyOldSlots.com/forum then that would be appreciated. I do not limit the length of your description so you can be as detailed as you want to be.

Photos not allowed in COCAs classified ads

Postby Dave » Thu May 11, 2006 9:08 pm

I received an email from one of the people who is working on the COCA web page.

At this time, they do not want photos in their classified ads and they edited the ad I put in to remove the photo.

Since they do not want photos, I have removed the instructions on how to do it.

So, if you were planning on submitting a COCA ad and showing a photo of the machine please do not do it.

They hope to allow photos in the future, but I got the impression it will be a long time until they do.

Their web page is being built by volunteers and they have limited time & resources.

Obviously, photos will still be allowed in the classified ads submitted here.

Sorry for any confusion.

Why wouldn't COCA want pictures in their ads? Don't they have enough room in their system for the pictures?

Wouldn't photos really help in advertising an item?

I am confused.

It was not a matter of space on the server. The photo I posted was on my server and my offer to help people put photos up would also use resources on my servers, not COCA's.

The same goes for bandwidth, any bandwidth required for the photos would come from my servers.

I think they were concerned about the size of the photos. I offered, what I thought was a simple solution but they still said no.

I didn't really understand their reasons so I am not even going to attempt to rationalize them.

I will send COCA an email asking them to post a message here explaining the rationale.

Here is the reply I received from COCA.

Dave

You can post the following statement on your forum regarding the classified
ad web site.

Unfortunately, the COCA Classified Ad web page was not designed for photos.
COCA may be able to offer that feature at a future date, but currently don't
have it set up to
assure 1) that all members have that option, 2) that the photos will fit
appropriately in the page layout and 3) that the photos are automatically
optimized so that the page
doesn't take too long to load. It is not easy to design a web page that
will do the above. We placed that feature on the COCA web team's To Do
list, but we are very backlogged and the COCA volunteers have only limited
amount of time to develop new web features. If a COCA member has web
development experience and knows how to code PHP and would like to help code
the web site, please contact Ken Durham at durham22@bellatlantic.net

Pretty lame reply if you ask me.

Given the fact that there still is no forum, I wont hold my breath on waiting for photos in the ads.

I figure it's a joke, but just in case you're serious----"ROTFLMAO" = "Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off".
