The SF Airport Museum is a very serious and fully accredited museum. They set up rotating exhibits in each of the 3 terminals. The organization started prior to 9/11, back when people were allowed to go to the gates to welcome incoming friends and family. The exhibits were open to everyone back then. The designers could not have foreseen the nightmare that is today's airport security. The exhibits take up space between the terminal and the gates, an area that used to consist solely of a passageway to walk through or take the moving walkway. A perfect place to dawdle if you aren't in a hurry. There is unfortunately no room to move the exhibit cases into the main part of the terminal.
The one exception is the International Terminal, which is newer and larger than the domestic terminals. They have a huge exhibit area that is in the main part of the terminal, open to anyone.
Unfortunately for us, they didn't put the coin-op exhibit there. It's limited to travelers on United.
