I find oddball screws in old machines that are 4-36 instead of 4-40.

There are different classes of thread fit, some are "interference fit" and you may have those instead of the standard fit.

A tap and die set comes in really handy when playing with these old slots.

I've found that Mills machines use the less common NF 10-32 screws. I always keep a screw gauge checker plate handy, which are available fairly inexpensively, and have thread gauges as well.
