Mills 1933 Cast Iron Horse Head Bonus 25 cent machine

Postby TheFatman » Fri Jun 26, 2015 6:56 pm

What a great find for me. This was the first slot I ever did a repair on in the 70's and have had a desire for it ever since. I have started the clean up up and will not repaint or strip the cabinet. Will be posting pics of it soon. Love the fact that I can clean it up with OOOO steel wool and it cleans well. Have some bald spots dut for the originality and the decals ... I would rather keep it as a barn fine and clean up the casting keeping it all original. I have got the Bonus feature to work 100% which I love wokkng on. Dont hardly ever see q quarter machine as I can remember. PICS SOON

Very nice machine. I have the identical nickel machine. In my office and one of my favorite playing machines - the cast iron construction make this so heavy and solid that the play is distinctively smooth and clean. Being cast iron, unlikely that this is 1933. Mine is 470xxx range serial putting it in 1940-1941 period - war preparation and war years where they couldn't use aluminum.

I'm still not giving up. Some day I will find a nice Cast Iron Horse Head Bonus. But that is one of the best thing about this hobby. THE HUNT. Almost as fun as the FIND. But I do accept leads. :D Congratulations on a beautiful machine Dave.

Here is what I believe is an early 193??? Not cast iron. Someone had repainted it in the past. I have reason to believe it was repainted back in the 1980"s. I do not believe this was the original color scheme. I believe it should be a darker brown with like a bright yellow trim. Serial number 4230XX which I think dates it about 1937.

For your information, the first horse Bonus was introduced in .... 1937 and not 1933 !!!
You can see a 1937 horse Bonus here : http://retro-jackpot.fr/mills/bonus/fonctionnement
Look the award card... The Horse bonus had a 2x10 stops mech. The production stop around 1938 and Mills introduced after the New Horse Bonus.
The Mech was a 20 stops mechanism and the award card was a standard award card.
Your Machine is a New Horse Bonus. :D
37 slots machines.... May be more ?

My understanding is that the cast iron machines were produced with the original hammer gold paint and white paint on the horse head. This is because it doesnt polish up to a fine finish as aluminum does. I do love the polished look. I do see a difference in serials so it is very possible I have a newer reel mech with an older caast iron castings. Still very happy to have the machine for what I paid for it. Thanks to everyone for their expertise and input on this. :P

What I see for serials are MLB 2514 A and under it is P5 this is on the mech frame and could also be a part # because of the MLB.
On the paper tag inside the cabinet is 177966
This make me feel that this is an older casting with a newer mech in it.
Sure wished they matched.... but for 1600$ ... dont think I can go wrong either way.

I do remember that the older machines were cast iron and the horses were painted white, some machines had that nasty gold glitter but this one is a hammer gold. No aluminum to polish there. But this is just the way I am. Using 0000 steel wool and alot of elbow grease to take down the top discolratoin. And its working well to brighten. I would so much rather bring a machine back to its original colors, and especially better its original paint. There will be a few bare spots on the horse but will deal with that in time. More pics as I progress on the casting cleaning. Thanks for the interests
