Recently finished my Wurlitzer 1015

Postby Rick-okc » Sat Oct 03, 2015 6:39 pm

Picked up a Wurlitzer 1015 last fall. Worked on it all winter.
Turned into a total restoration.
Haven't worked on a jukebox in over 25 years, so this was an experience for me.
Went well, didn't run into too many surprises.

Very nice. It's beautiful. =D>
How did it looked before? What did you use to guide you? Any good restoration books available? I may consider it a future project.

Beautiful!
Just what I like to see. A nicely restored 78rpm original, and not an aftermarket repro 45rpm, cassette tape, or CD version.
Next will be a computer generated I-Tunes version. If they don't already have one, that is! [-X

Here are a couple of pictures of the "before" machine.
It was missing all of the coin gear, had a bear claw tone arm, wrong amp, speaker cone had a big hole in it, plastics were cracked, wiring was a mess with bad patch jobs and frayed insulation everywhere. Veneer was loose and had a big gouge on one side and a bigger patch job on the other.
It did have the skirting along the bottom. It was removed when I took this shot.

Here are a couple more shots showing the sides now with the new veneer.
I went with a very blonde shellac finish.

I did add one thing to make it mine.
I know it's no where near original, but I wanted something to make it unique.
The only permanent "change/damage" to the machine is two screw holes in the bottom of the mech board.
I had a piece of 1/4" glass cut and laser etched with the Wurlitzer name.
I then made a small wood cradle with a 5' LED strip in the bottom that shines up through the glass.
I already had low voltage power going to a revamped end-of-play trip modification I made.
Now, there is virtually NO back pressure on the tone arm/needle at end-of-play.

It is beautiful.
A question from a newbie:
How much (about) would one like that go for and how much would it go for unrestored as you had it?
Thank you for the knowledge.

That's a good question.
Market seems to be way down on 1015s.
I've seen unrestored boxes going for $3000-4000. Some, even less.
Restored prices, I don't know. No near what they were getting a years ago.

Rick:
Thanks for the 'heads-up' on your neat little addition. Was wondering where that came from, as I had never seen one before.
But then again, there is a lot of stuff I don't notice, if it's an item that I don't usually work on. Turned out great, and the extra
added lighting feature really sets it off. =D>
In regards to 1015 prices, there was an original, with many issues, at the Jan. 2014 VCA auction, that brought $2,750.00 plus
the juice. At the same auction, was a 'OMT' 1015, in CD play, that went for $1,800.00 plus juice. Then again, way back in Oct.
2006, at VCA, an original/restored 1015 brought $6,000.00 plus juice. Prices seem to fluctuate just as much with Juke Boxes,
as with Slots.
