Handle pump lacking pressure

Hello!

The handle pump on my Castle Front is lacking pressure. I picked up a new leather washer and took it apart and replaced it, being sure to soak the new washer with oil first, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. The bolt in the end for adjusting the valve is in place but makes no difference in things.

Are there other tips or failure points I should be checking on this?

The barrel may be worn or pitted. Ream out the barrel,check the pump ends for a good seal and also the adj. screw.

Could this be the issue? I found a picture (below) of a pump assembly and it appears to have a spring-like washer (yellow thing) on the inside. Mine just has a regular flat washer -- as in, the leather washer is sandwiched between two 'regular' fender-style washers.

That springy like washer is a guide to maintain somewhat the edge bent over shape of the leather as it is moved in and out as the handle is pulled and released. The outer edge of the leather wraps over the profile of those strips if metal. Some of the leather pieces available have the cupping shape formed when you get it and that makes it easier to control. I would say that fluted part is definitely necessary to function properly.

Yes that is your problem. Look for a car wheel cylinder piston rubber cup. Must fit loose not too tight.
