Star Chief coin mech (3).JPG
I am having a problem with the 2 Jennings Star Chiefs.

First machine.....The case and the mech have matching serial number and are dated 10/63.
We purchased them some 15 years ago. It had orange glass and not red. The machines worked fine. Now the machines have been in storage and not played in years. We took the mechs out (See Photo). You can push the handle down, it comes back up and does nothing. None of the coins go across the top. The chain is tight and just seems everything has tention. Even if you put a coin in, pull the handle still nothing. Any ideas, thank you

Second machine...........Jennings Star Chief .... when you play it.... it is very sluggish and the third reel dies not lock up. After
spraying wd40 it takes a coin, plays, however; you have to put tention on the chain???? Can or should it be tighten somehow. Again thank you guys. When we get another thing to work, then something else doesnt work right. Getting it level is something that we found corrects a lot and blowing all the dust and dirt out helps tremendously. Learning these machines is a challenge.

Sounds like to me they need a complete cleaning and proper lube job with the proper lubricants. Sorry, although quick, spraying w-40 is not the answer and should be avoided. Partial disassembly is probably required, especially on the slides. Probably reel bundle. Take your time and clean extremely well. May need a solvent tank. Of course remove the reel bundle first. I bet if you do the above you will be very happy with the results. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts. It takes time. You know what they say, “ you never have time to do it right the first, but always do the second time”
Just my opinion

Thanks for the quick reply. I think you are right, they are just gummed up and dirty from not being played for years.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, either way, I would never commit to take one apart and clean it. I would have a bag parts, screws, springs, anything else left over. I was just wondering if it was just a half cocked position, because nothing moves.
