I have a mills high top that opens when I take the mech out and closes when I put it back in. I don't think it was made that way. The machine works great I just don't like the coins dumping out when I take mech out. Is there a part missing or did seller take it out to resell.

When mech is pulled out of cabinet the arm marked with the RED A in the picture moves towards the back and in so doing locks the jackpot so as not to release coins when mech is pulled out!
Possibly this is missing on your front jackpot or the spring that operates this arm is missing or stretched!

Yep!
I'm missing the part marked A. I found a shoulder screw in the cabinet that is probably used for part A. Is there a reason for removing this part.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that style jackpot was not used in the high tops. That is an earlier style jackpot used in the half tops. The high top jackpots used a different trip mechanism and did not have that lever on them. You may have a machine that has mismatched parts in it and that is why it is not working right.

If shoulder screw is present on side of jackpot housing as shown in the picture below then more than likely the part, lever "A" has been removed and I would replace it if dumping of the jackpot on mech removal is a problem which in a home setting is not that big of an issue as long as all jackpot trip and reset levers both on jackpot housing and payout slide assembly are set correctly as described for reference in the other two pictures below!
As when sliding the mech in the jackpot should not dump if the mech is slid in smoothly and firmly with no hesitation or reverse movement as that may cause the tripping of the MAIN JACKPOT TRIP lever! Also, your name is familiar and as I am in Northern California have you ever called me off of one of my internet listings, just curious!

I have seen many variations of the front jackpots for the hightop and halftop with slight variations in levers and style thereof but, and I may be wrong, I believe the jackpots are not designated by hightop and halftop, other than possibly casino style front fill to maintain the amount of coins dumped to keep the Gaming Commission happy in Nevada or the self fill working off of the mech, possibly Dave, mrslot1, may have input on whether there was a designated jackpot for either one!

It doesn't look like there are mismatched parts on the machine. Jackpot and reserve work as should.

If your mech looks like the one pictured above than yes you need that side lever. But if it looks like the picture here where there is a jackpot trip lever above the top jackpot slide than you don't need that lever. I believe most if not all high tops had this type of set-up unless someone changed the mech to an earlier type.
