Which reel strips?

Postby Walter Newton » Mon Apr 19, 2021 6:32 am

I have a Mills 1931 FOK Vender with the wrong reel strips (first off, they are not fortune strips). I noticed a few pay combinations lining up, but looking at the payout disks, they don't reflect what is really going on with the mechanics.

But how do I tell WHICH set of reel strips I need to order?

I see a fortune strip set called "Mills Slot Machine Reel Strips SP Fortune 1, 2, 3," but I have no idea if this is really the right set (it's a 20-symbol strip, of course).

Is there any trick to matching machine to necessary reel strips?

First I would assume that you have a ten stop reel bundle with ten stop discs and if not the reel bundle or discs have been changed which would make the process a little harder!
The "SP" usually stipulates Special Percentage as in your designation above!
If you do have a ten stop bundle then more than likely you would need a set similar to what is shown below on a page from Rick Frink's catalog!
Worst case if you know how to read your reel discs for proper comparison to the reel strips either used or needed that may be needed to do as well!
I would start by contacting Rick Frink at frink1969@sbcglobal.net

OK,

Yes, I have a 10 stop machine, the reel bundle on it has 20-symbols.

I am assuming (I hate assumptions) that I have a standard percentage machine.

No, I don't know how to read the payout disks, not with any precision.

I can't get Frink to respond to any of my emails.

And Dave Berten always seems to be a week or two behind in answering any inquiries.

So I feel stuck at this point.

Well being 75 and having been involved with slot machines since my casino days in the 60's/70's and currently a one man operation as both Rick and Dave are as well a little patience is sometimes needed as they both have many balls in the air and handling parts as I also do I recognize the time needed to sort, find, select and ship parts can be very time consuming while trying to keep the customers cost down!
Bona Fortuna!

Walter,
To determine the correct symbols for your reel strips, you should rotate each disc of the three 3 reel discs and see which upper payout fingers go through which holes, meaning does the first payout finger go through a hole in the disc (cherry) or the second payout finger (orange), or the 3rd payout finger (plum) or the 4th (bell) or the 5th (bar). Remember that a bar is winner for orange through bar (example: orange-orange-bar, etc.) You'll do one stop at a time. Obviously, since you have a 20 symbol, 10 stop machine, every other symbol is a non-winner, so could be any symbol, but hopefully, based on the winners (10 of the 20 stops), you'll be able to determine which of the reel strips that Dave or Rick sells is the correct one for you. It takes a little time, but then you write down each symbol for each reel strip for each of the 3 discs. Hope that makes sense.

Yes it does.

I was hoping it was simpler, but I had an idea that's what I was going to have to do.

Thanks a bunch.
