Splits in cabinet

Postby Shane » Mon Jun 07, 2021 2:50 pm

Looking for advice on solutions for splits in the base and sides of the cabinet (see pic).

The cabinet still seems structurally strong but would look better if the splits were smaller or gone. I don't want to take the cabinet apart.

Any recommendations on how to remedy or better to leave alone?

Thanks,

Shane

The splits are from the wood shrinking over time. The best way is to cut and glue thin veneer strips in the splits. Use walnut or oak veneer that match the original wood color.

Thanks, Radiorich.

Would you recommend wedging strips into the cabinet as is or taking the cabinet apart?

I used to own an antique restoration business. What I would recommend is taking the cabinet apart and glue the pieces back together with dowels. Then if you are wishing to refinish it, sand the parts while you have it apart and then assemble it. Should then be good as new.

Yes wedge and glue the strips in. I would not take the cabinet apart. If the cab finish is bad then strip it and refinish it. Here is a photo of one that i did.
