Repairing this Mills hi-top, and pulled the escalator apart. Apparently, the former owner wanted only one coin to show in the window, and modified it permanently to drop the moving coin into the drain. All but two index fingers removed, and the bottom rail modified and tilted.

WHY would someone go through all that trouble??




A slot was cut at one of the mounting holes to allow the rail to bend downward.

Usually referred to as a rolling escalator. This was done to help minimize escalator jams. This would have been an operator modification and not a collector. They wanted to reduce any potential maintenance issues.

The roll away was used to reduce jams I have had two that it was done too but I replaced them with originals. I like to see all the coins in the window.

Since the index fingers are cut off, the coins won't fill the window unless I snug the path up a bit and eliminate the gaps between the coins. It won't look right, it'll be over-crowded, and the coins won't separate like they should.

I'll probably just leave it alone and not try to bring it back to original unless I can find an unmolested escalator for parts.

What you have is a Buckley revamp escalator. Buckley changed the setup so that the coins would not jam in the escalator when a tooth misaligned with the coins. Still need the cabinet pic to see if yours is a Buckley or Mills. If it is a Buckley then it is the right style escalator. Later Jim

It may be a Buckley escaltor but doesn't resemble any of mine but it has been modified to what they call a roll of escalator it was used so business could make more money with less jams.
