Help with a Watling rol-a-top

Postby dbilling » Wed Jul 23, 2025 11:20 am

Hello! brand new forum member here...I recently dove in the deep end and purchased a non-working antique slot machine from an estate sale (Watling ROL-A-TOP). I have provenance of a mid-1980s refurb on this machine, and I figured (likely incorrectly) that with it living in a private home the last 40 years that it would be easy to get it working! On day one, I was able to easily get past an issue with a broken key, learned how to pull the mech, and removed a bunch of coins that were all over everywhere...but that was the end of the success story... now, on day 2, I'm stumped...The machine simply passes nickels to the coin return without accepting them, so I'm not even to the point where I can test the rest the mechanism. Looking at the coin accepter, I can't even see how a nickel could possibly even get to the spot its supposed to go, there's a paddle (if that's what it's called) that it doesn't get past, and I can't even see how the paddle could move to a position that it would work. (I've attached two pics, one at the point where a nickel is about to get rejected and another after it got rejected...

all in all so I suspect things are in a really jammed/locked out state, and I'm not sure what to do next.

Can anyone give me a pointer to to docs/help/guides that might get me going again? Youtube wasn't terribly helpful for this particular issue... I am pretty handy but need some guidance so I don't start breaking things!

Any advice appreciated!

You should get yourself a copy of " the Watling owners pictorial guide, mead publishing $41.95. I found it perfect for help with restoration & maintenance. It is very well illustrated.

Hope you get it running. Laurence U.K.

The brass piece is the second coin rejector, and it appears that it needs adjustment to keep the first coin from being rejected also (which has happened in your photo). It has to be adjusted slightly, and carefully, as it can break in the middle (as I found out the hard way). Watling make a later version of the second coin rejector that's made of two different sheet metal pieces, with a spring connected between them, that works much better. I had two Rol-A-Tops, one with each version of the second coin rejector, and the second version works better, in my opinion.
