Mills Poinsettia - No Key - Best way to pick & Replace key?

I have a 1929-1930 Mills nickel poinsettia slot machine. Been in the family for decades and is still working just fine.
But we don't have a key for it.
Spoke to a local locksmith and he said I could leave the machine and have his guys 'work on it' to see if anyone could pick it. I won't leave the machine of course -- what a knucklehead to suggest I do that - between them playing it and/or opening and taking the money.
Said because f the side tumblers it's not an easy pick.
Then said once open, he should be able, with a few attempts, to create a key that would work in it.

So I'm still at square one - how can I get it open without damage?
And second, once open what's best option - see a lock number inside and hunt to buy someone's matching key? Or have to replace the whole lock?

I don't want to drill it out - trying to keep it original, and not want the hassle of drilling (or damaging it).
Any ideas and options?

Where are you located. I can pick and re-key the lock.

Hi. I don’t know if you ever had any luck with picking your lock, but my go to person is my local fire fighter friend. Here, they are trained to pick locks - how handy! He has opened a couple of things for me, just for the fun of it.
