Need Help Identifying This Caille Brothers Machine

Postby RedPanda » Wed Sep 08, 2021 5:40 pm

Hello,
I've been doing a ton of research the last few days about a nickel slot machine that has been in the family for a long time. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out the exact model of Slot machine that I have. I found this forum and thought i'd ask for assistance. I'll apologize ahead of time for the long post as I recount my journey and own discoveries.

A quick story of this machine, My Grandfather (born 1941) purchased this machine when he was 18 years old and kept it until he passed away in 2006. My Dad (who use to play it often growing up) Has kept it since. There is evidence of repairs done by my grandfather (newer screws, hex nets, replaced springs) as well as some repairs that myself and my dad has done. but this machine still operates great though the outside is due for some TLC. my goal is to restore the outside of the cabinet (repaint, polish chrome, and sand and repaint the wood).

Here is the Machine:

Now ive narrowed it down to 3/4 possible machines based on my own research. I've provided links to the machines i found:
1936-37 Caille Cadet - https://www.lot-art.com/auction-lots/Ca ... .19-aspire
19-38 Caille Cadet - https://www.icollector.com/1938-Caille- ... _i18933233
1937 Caille "The Junior" - https://simpleauctionsite.com/lot-244967.aspx
1935(ish) Caille Doughboy - https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/lot-266305.aspx

Now a few things to note on my machine thats making it difficult to narrow it down:

First, there is a "604" on top of the nickel accepter. this is not stamped in like other part numbers so i don't think thats what it is (I may be wrong). It almost seems like a machine number if it was in a place with a lot of machines so that they knew what machine to work on if it malfunctioned. (please provide insight or correct if this line of thinking is in error)

Second, there is a "600" or "009" stamped into the side of the wood panel. now this looks like it was stamped like other part numbers, i just find it weird that a wood part has a part number on the outside of a machine.

Lastly, there is a "coin return" on the same side of the machine as the pull lever, but this does not line up with any inner workings to return a coin if it doesn't fit or the machine malfunctions. i do not see this on any other mahinces that i've found.

thanks to a post i've found on this forum, i was also able to locate the serial # on the back, lower left, of the machine. the serial # is 120022.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read this and for any insight as to what machine I have and the history behind these awesome machines.
I'm hoping to preserve this knowledge as this machine continues to be passed down through my Family.

It's a Caille "Commander," probably 1937-1938. I've seen that coin-return-from-nowhere once before, also on a Commander, and I was-- and remain-- just as flummoxed by it as you are!

It is a Caille Commander, similar to the Cadet. That 3 digit number would be an operator inventory number also so the operator can identify his machines.

Thought I ought to mention, the auction sites are unreliable for identifying the later Caille models... when in doubt, they used to call them all "Doughboys," but more recently they've apparently defaulted to naming them all "Cadets." The machine depicted in every one of the links you posted is actually a Commander; the third one happens to be a Commander "Junior Console." Thank you so much for the quick replies and for the knowledge you were able to give us. My dad passes along his thanks as well!

We've been trying so long to figure this out and now feel a huge weight lifted off our shoulders.

I figured those auction sites weren't accurate, but it all makes sense now, and you're right, that Club Console is a Beauty! They don't make things how they use to do they? its a nice piece of art.

Now begins the process to restore it to it's former glory! lol.

Thanks again marsonion and watlingboy!
