I've recently acquired a Superior Confection cigarette gumball TS and have been looking at pictures online of similar machines. Everyone I find has a routed groove around the side painted red where mine is just a smooth flat panel. My question is, is mine a newer or older model.

I think you are just missing the top layer of the laminated side panel. Like plywood. Probably lost through water damage.

Since I've been working on it I've sanded the paint down to the bare wood and there is no trace of the design on what would be the core veneer nor is there any trace of glue on the base of it. It's just too clean to have had the veneer peal off.
