Bull Perfume Vendor in action

Postby bakerb95619 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 11:12 pm

I was watching an old movie called "Min and Bill" on Turner Classic Movies tonight. At about the 35 minute mark, Wallace Beery puts a penny into a Bull Perfume vendor, pulls the horns, and sprays himself. The vendor looks like the Continental Novelty model on page 253 of Silent Salesman Too, but there are differences to the marquee casting and the instruction card text. The movie version has a coin tube that sticks up about 8 inches above the vendor.

I always like to watch for coin-op machines in these old movies. There's a Clark Gable movie where he runs a gambling boat, and they show two long rows of slot machines, looks like at least 50 of them, and just after that they show more machines and several floor model one-wheel machines.

Any other movie sightings out there?

There are a couple of Twilight Zone shows where the show is around a slot machine.

One episode that sticks in my mind is a possessed Rol-A-Top and at the end of the show I think the guys kills himself.

The Rol-A-Top is a 'dollar' Rol-A-Top which they never made and I think there was a big ass light where the escalator usually is.

Great old movie: Bad Day at Black Rock.
There are a couple scenes of an old gooseneck slot machine in the lobby of a hotel. I forget what model it is, but the movie is worth watching even without the slot.
I noticed just yesterday that it was running on HBO.

Dick Bueschel did a series of articles for the old Coin-op Classics magazine; they were called "Movie Watch."
With the help of reader input, he developed a pretty good list of movies with coin op machines.
Don't know how many of those movies made it to DVD, but now that we have Netflix, it would be handy to have the list for rainy day movie night.

I'm now attempting to add a scan of the cumulative index that he published in a 1997 issue.
If you get any of the movies, however, be advised the scenes with coin-op may be fleeting in many of the movies; if you blink, you may miss it.

The machine on the counter of Jake Brodofski's store, is a Jennings "Operator Bell" with a Bull Durham Jackpot conversion front.
Nice machine. I can only imagine how many this outfit had on location. Ah, the good-ole-days! Think about how many of them were sledged. #-o

One of my favorites is The Gunfighter with Gregory Peck. When he is at the bar, you can see in the reflection of the back bar mirror, a line of uprights all along the back wall and when he leaves he goes right by an upright, so close you can read the words Caille Big 6. Another good one is Laurel and Hardy playing the Mills musical double in Way Out West.

That is a great episode.

If you look closely, the Rol-A-Top that the guy is playing is one with the Buckley vendor panels on it. When it comes to visit him in his hotel room it is a coin front and there is a cover over the jackpot which has a smile on it. Pretty sick sense of humor :D

Also, there is a nice AC Multi Bell machine next to the Rol-A-Top in the casino. You will see it when the casino workers put the machine back up after the guy knocks it over.
