i was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me. i have an early 30's mills slot machine and on the payouts of 3 and five it pays out right, but on the 10's, 14's and 18's it's off by one quarter. i read on this coinop forum it is because of the new quarters not being the same as the old ones and affecting the payout slides somehow, having silver and all. is this right?

That's exactly right. Copper clad quarters never wear. Payouts were based on coins in circulation, not all brand new coins. In the case of Watling, their payout card said 7 to 9 coins for an 8 pay or 17 to 19 for an 18 pay and so on and that was with old nickel or silver coins. There is nothing wrong with your machine or slides. If it really bothers you, buy some old silver quarters and problem solved.
