I am trying to get working a Caille Cadet or Doughboy 5 cent... Dont really know for sure. Here is what mine looks like except mine in green:


Anyone know for sure what it is or how to tell them apart? Half the pics online call what I would call a cadet to be a doughboy.

Anyway, I am looking for any assistance on rebuilding the hydraulic pump. First off what the heck is that fluid in there now! I opened the adjustment knob a little and got some fluid to leak out and damn is that strong smelling... Like hydraulic fluid and 151 Rum or something. I am sure I got about 3 kinds of cancer just touching it! hehe. I am guessing it is basically hydraulic fluid as when a little dripped onto my painted folding chair, it started to strip the pait off pretty quickly! So can I replace that with just break fluid or something like that?

It does not look like it has a major leak or any leak around the shaft where I read about it having to be repaired there. Looks more like it leaked around the end cap or big nut holding the "shaft cap" on, although it probably is. I know there is residue over quite a bit of the insides of the machine I am trying to clean off.

I do have a good machine shop locally that I have used that I am hoping will help me rebuild it.

I am also not sure of its exact function. On mine, when I swing it to the end, it slowly moves about 1/2 of its travel back and then moves quickly the other 1/2 travel. I am assuming that is because it is low on fluid. Does that sound about right?

Any tips on pulling it apart are appreciated. Like if I unscrew the end cap, there is a big spring in there that will come flying out. (That is what I am guessing)

I am not trying to do a full restore, just trying to get it working for a friend. I have always wanted to go through one of these fascinating completely mechanical machines and my friend is finally allowing me to try to get it working. My normal expertise is electronic repair but I also play around with old clocks so I am not a stranger to mechanical things.

I am still pulling everything apart and cleaning all the old grease off of it. Is Lithium grease OK to use to re-lubricate it or is that a no-no?

Looks like it is complete except for missing on piece on the front of the case inside that should be hooked up to the reserve jackpot slide so I hope I am able to get it to function without that. Also cash box is missing, but no biggie there.

Anyone have any parts breakdown or repair/service manuals for this or any Caille machines? Or any other resources that would assist me.

The caille is a DOUGHBOY Made around 1936. I dont think it should have fluid in it. I have one and mine works like a screen door piston. NO FLUID IN IT. Good luck these machines are not reilable like the Mills and Jennings slots.

I think we are talking about 2 different parts.


Sorry about the pic, but I already had the parts removed. The part I think you are talking about is the one on the lower center of my pic. This does not have fluid in it and it goes on the mech upper left hand side looking at the front. The regulator I am talking about is the one in my pic lower left, that goes on the mech mounted to the base easly seen from the back. It does have some hydraulic type fluid in it and I am sure it is supposed to.

Are you sure yours is a Dough Boy? I though the Dough Boy looked like this:


You wouldn't have some pics of the inside of yours looking at the front jackpot mechanism with the main mech removed would you? Still trying to determine what exactly is supposed to be in mine that is missing.

I do not have this in my unit. I have a regular clock meck in it FOR THE REGULATION.

The reason the fluid smells so bad is because it is an organic material. It's Sperm whale oil. Used frequently for lubrication back then. Caille instruction sheets on the back door of early uprights specfically said to use sperm oil. Don't try to remove the large nut on the pump as you will probably only end up rounding the corners on it and never get it removed. If you want to send me an email with your phone number, I'll give you a call and I think I can answer most of your questions. I can tell you much easier than I can type all the information you have requested.

Ahhhh. Very interesting. I was under the impression that all Cadets and Dough Boys had the hydraulic regulator, But maybe only Cadets do. I know I have a flier from way back when that talks about the new adjustable regulator on the Cadet model.

You have some pics you can share? I would love to see them via email if you don't want to go through the work of putting them online so you can post them here.

That makes sense... and with a handle like "watlingboy" I guess you would know! (sounds a lot like whalingboy: joke!)

Yea, that big nut on the back is already pretty messed up from previous attempts at removal so that is why I wanted to ask before I started to dissect it.

I have restored a couple of these and a friend brought me one to do, but at the time I was busy. We checked the actuator and found the fluid level low. He asked if I thought adding fluid would hurt I said give it a try. He got some good quality hydraulic fluid added some adjusted the bleed valve and works great. T.J. (':roll:')

Jack Brink of Metal Form Products in N. Hollywood, CA sells the rebuild kit for Caille hydraulic clocks, he also rebuilds them if you are patient. The late Cailles had these tempermental (leaky) hydraulic clocks that regulate the speed of the unwinding phase of the mechanism and a lot of them were converted to mechanical clocks over the years by restorers.
