A checkerboard rol a top has come up for auction. Do they usually pay off on one cherry?

Yes - one cherry payout was an advertised option for the late Rol-A-Tops. In the excellent book - Collector's Treasury of Antique Slot Machines by Peter Bach, the 2/48 Watling ad mentions one cherry payout option (page 426-427). And Bueschel's 10th anniversary Slots 1 has clear picture of a one cherry payoff Checkerboard Rol-A-Top. Your link shows a very nice looking machine!

And you have the "rol a top cherry" with a 3/10 payout !!
3 for two cherry and 10 for two cherry and bell !!
