Watling yellow

Postby kingsley » Wed Oct 23, 2013 8:43 am

I am currently working on getting my 1947 Watling Rol-A-Top nickle Checkerboard operational and want to do some slight touchups to the yellow case. The paint is original. Are there any paint codes or certain bands/colors that match the Watling. Just asking in the event I don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Unfortunately there are no PPG or Dupont codes that match. Even if there was, because paint batches vary, it would not be an exact match for touch ups. Another complication is that Watling yellow varies greatly. Some castings have a slightly orange yellow tint, some have a more brownish yellow tint so using the exact same yellow each time was not a big deal to Watling, only us. You can take your casting to a good quality automotive paint supply and they will usually custom mix a color to match your yellow. There is usually a $25 or $50 charge for color matching, plus the paint or if you have a good eye, you can go to a hobby shop and buy bottles of Testors or some other brand of paint and try to color match it your self.
