B.A. Steven Little Casino INVESTOR Counter Pocket

Postby dustydog22 » Wed Jul 21, 2021 1:23 pm

Hello all,

I'm new here and was invited by Ken Durham to join this forum. I have a B.A. Stevens Manufacturing Toledo, OH nickle drop machine that has been in my family for over 50 years. I've done an an exhaustive research and cannot find out any info on this machine. I believe it was probably manufactured in the 1890's. Does anyone here have any knowledge about this machine or research advice to find out more about it?
Thanks,
Mark

Many companies made coin drop machines.
What's interesting to me; this one is 5 cent rather than 1 cent; seems unusual for its time.
It may have been upgraded to 5 cent at some point;
looks like the coin slot has been monkeyed with;
the play field should indicate which slot at the bottom is a winner;
is there a knob on the side to release the jackpots?
Can you post a photo of the mechanism?

Stevens was not a major machine maker, but they did make a couple other machines in the 1890s;
Slot Dice Shaker;
Rival (a non-coin dice machine);
Star (wheel machine).

Correct; same machine!

Bueschel writes:
"It was made by at least four or five makers, although one or two might have made them all and sold them to other outfits who put their name on them."
"Little Casino Amusement Company .....may be the oldest and first."
However, the earliest ads he was aware of were by the Maley Novelty Co. of Cincinnati in 1893.

Apparently they were 5 cent play even in the 1890s.
On Mark's machine, you can see the shadow of 2 ornaments that were originally mounted on the wood to the sides of the name plate.

Apparently, the JPs dumped automatically from the weight of the coins when they were full; is that correct Mark?

Here are more pictures. When a nickel is dropped it will either land in one of the slots or fall behind for the house. When a slot gets sighted enough it will drop its contents to the tray. That is the only way it pays out.

Interesting machine; looks all original; literally no mechanism; as you know, JPs dumped just from weight of coins when they were full (or close to it).
It should be noted that your name plate says Stevens is the Manufacturer; that's info that even Buschel apparently had not discovered; now we know Stevens was one of the makers (unless they lied on the name plate).

That page you got with it is from Bueschel's Guide to 100 Slot Machines, Vol 3, 1981.
That's where I got my quotes posted above.

Very nice; recommend you keep it in the family!

B.A. STEVENS WAS A MANUFACTURER OF BAR, GAMBLING AND POOL ROOM EQUIPMENT INCLUDING BUTCHERS EQUIPMENT AND WINE MAKING PRESSES. IN BUSINESS FROM AROUND LATE 1880'S TO EARLY 1900'S. TOLEDO AT ONE TIME WAS THE LARGEST MANUFACTURER OF GAMBLING EQUIPMENT IN THE USA. VERY LITTLE INFO ON THE COMPANIES EXISTS. THERE WAS FIVE MANUFACTURERS FROM THE EARLY 1920'S TO 1940. ALL CEASED OPERATIONS JUST BEFORE WW2 WHEN THE LARGEST COMPANY BURNED TOO THE GROUND IN 1940.
