the way you were TRYING to do it was the best way...not let them know you want it.....now they will know, and that can be a bad thing. many years ago i took a machine to a local auction. i knew the auctioneer, as i had been to a few of his auctions. i asked him to either get me 1300 for the machine, or i would take it home when auction was over. he said "no problem". i watched from the back of the room, and when i saw one guy bid 1350, i knew the bidding was ended. imagine my surprise when a bid showed up for 1450, and then this guy bids 1550, and gets it.......there was nobody else BIDDING against him! so afterward i asked jack, "why did you bid against him, when my target was reached already?". i KNEW how bad he wanted it", he said. "he looked the machine over, inside and out, and i knew he would go the higher amount".....the auctioneer was the only one bidding against him. so i get my 1300, minus commision, and he got the rest. so it cost that guy 250 extra for "showing his cards"..... ever see an auctioneer" back up, where was my LAST bidder"....that's what would have happened if the guy DIDN'T go for the 1550....backtrack to that 1350 bid,...he "can't remember who was bidding 1450", so sells it for 1350. i'm not saying morphys does that, but i am saying it was a wakeup call to ME to know how dishonest they CAN be. it shaped how i approach auctions for the rest of my life, and iv'e seen many dirty tricks in the last 30 years since.
