1957 Genco Grandma Horoscope and Fortune Teller

Postby hur13y » Fri Nov 20, 2020 9:35 am

Looking for parts to refurbish a 1957 Grandma Horoscope and Fortune Teller machine I just inherited. This would include any service manuals or fortune cards and rolls as well. Canopy has damage, Grandma has damage, not sure on internal issues yet.

Congrats on acquiring the machine! These are fun.
Feel free to email and we can connect on parts / repairs.
I've restored / gone through a handful of these over the years and have some NOS rolls (in original Mike Munves boxes!) and fortune cards.
I also got fabric made to accurately replicate the original Grandma dresses.
happy to help-

Once I get the machine on site I’ll take some pics and post them...and start asking lots of questions about how to get it refurbished and running like new.

Got some pre shipping photos. It actually looks better than I was expecting outside of the canopy and some of the glass art that will need replacement. Unfortunately there are no keys so I’ll have to drill the locks and replace and figure out why it doesn’t run.

Do NOT drill the locks!

Take it to any locksmith, and they'll pick the locks and make keys for you. That's what I've done with my machines that I didn't get keys with, and they've never failed to be able to do it yet.

Thanks for the suggestion MikeB. I’ll see if I can get a mobile locksmith to come out as I don’t have a truck to take it in a service call.

Look on YouTube on how to pick locks. Usually not to difficult.
Locks just keep honest people out.

So I have got the prize in hand. It is in better shape than I was expecting. The 2 locks on the lower left side actually had the back of the latch removed so the lower cabinet opened as it had nothing keeping it locked. The upper right side lock is unfortunately locked. I called a few locksmiths and all 3 said they could not open the lock without drilling it. They also could not make me keys for the existing locks unless they had an external number on the face, which they do not. All 3 basically said I need to just put replacement locks in.

I plugged the unit in and the 2 light bulbs above Grandma light up and the front horoscope panel general lights but not the selected horoscope as you turn the dial. Coin mech appear to trigger power but the carousel inside does not rotate to selected hopper or drop a fortune scroll. Speaking of which...lots of scrolls were inside the cabinet! Lucky find.
