Hi! Introduction and a Question about a Mill War Eagle

I wanted to introduce myself as a new member. I currently live in the Washington, DC burbs and have been a collector of mostly Art Deco items for may years. I've always liked the Mills Slots but haven't seen many around. This one is currently listed for $1500. I have an appointment to see and possibly purchase it tomorrow morning. The pics are from the ad and are not that good, but from what I've read, the handle isn't correct. I'm sort of worried that it may be a repro. Hard to tell from the pics, but what do you guys think? I don't think that's the correct handle for this machine. Be sure to look at everytng else. What are the payout slides made of. They should be brass. I think that's another area to tip you off that this is a reproduction machine.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it was the right handle thanks for info on here. Also, from what I understand is that the repro's don't have a serial number to the right of the window and the original's do.

There are many things the repros don't have. That handle is a big red flag to me and means look more carefully. Most, not all, but most repros are 25 cent. Most do not have handle pumps. Most repros have chrome plated castings, they should be polished aluminum. I would not buy a plated machine even if it is original. The original cases have nails in the front and back edges of the bottom wood. Some repro cases were made with these nails but most were not. I would do some more research, talk to more people and find someone in your area who can help guide you. Get referrals from other collectors. I've seen too many people get stung just takng the word of the seller. Be wary of phrases such as, "I don't know, this is the way I got it." If you don't know what to look for, maybe best to let this one go. They are not rare.

Great advice Watlingboy. Just got off the phone with the seller. I asked about the serial number and she said it "may have been scratched off". I asked her about the handle and she became very evasive telling me she had other buyers. I passed. Great forum and I've learned a lot already!
