Rol-A-Top Coin Front top casting

There are two versions (that I have seen) of the coin front top casting. On one version, which is also seen on the Rol-A-Tor, the coin front casting has a liberty head coin at the top, closest to the mouth of the horn of plenty.

On other models, at that same coin position, the coin is a shield, similar to the reverse of the 1868 US nickel.

Does anyone know if there was a reason for the change, or when exactly they used each of the variations

In the U.S patent application filed by Thomas Watling on Sept. 21, 1934, for a 'HEAD OF COIN CONTROLLED MACHINE CASING", the patent drawing shows the liberty head coin.
