Bally’s Golden Gate 742A Slot - Rare, Value?

Hello,

I just bought this slot machine at an auction, but I can’t find anything about this exact machine. I gathered from the model number that is was from 1963-1964, but that’s all I really know. Oh, and I figure it came from the Golden Gate Casino (for obvious reasons)z

Does anyone know anything else about this specific machine? Is it rare? Valuable? I intend to sell it so any information would be appreciated!

Glad you like it! Yeah, I can’t find much about it and ChatGPT struggled, too. Figured that meant it’s pretty uncommon but I don’t know if that will translate to desirability and value.

Yes it is a username. I’m pretty sure he is on this forum but not 100%. He is definitely on newlifegames. His username does not have a space in it but my phone wouldn’t let me type it like that.

I emailed Freddy Bailey as he used to be the Bally distributor for Europe in the early 1960s. He said he was thrown at first by the 742A but then added 742A-232 and said that’s what this machine is. It was known as “2 For The Money” and was made in 1964. He said the cabinet color isn’t the original color and it was probably painted to match the decor at Golden Gate Casino. He said it was one of the very first Bally slot machines to be made in the 1960s.

Wolf Talk also checked it out and was a bit stumped by the internal mechanisms and what was going on. He thought it was possibly a prototype or an aftermarket project someone had put together. I think Freddy really cleared it up, though.

Oh and someone at NLG found another example of this machine that someone has for sale. Theirs has the top sign, but I’m missing mine. They’re asking $1650 firm for their machine, so I suppose that’s probably around the correct value. Mine being a bit less without the top sign, of course.

I've personally seen about a half dozen of these Golden Gate Double Slots and owned one myself about 30-40 years ago!! All were nickel and all were made up for the Golden Gate Casino in Las Vegas. The first one I ever saw was at the Pasadena (CA.) Funfair and given as a door prize by the show promoters back in the mid 80's or so. I remember because that was the first place door prize. I offered $400 to the winners who really didn't want it. They considered my offer but decided to keep it. In an old issue of Loose Change Magazine they even pictured this winning machine. Only the attendees with paid admission to the show were entered in the drawing. I believe Dan Mead the Show Promoter at the time secured this "grand prize" as he lived in Vegas and had connections there. Some at the show questioned at the time whether this was a legal slot or not (25 year law was in effect). Didn't matter since it was still given as the door prize!! I was the second prize winner drawn that year and won free admission to the show the following year!!!! Where is this slot now located?? Fun bit of trivia that brings back lots of great memories and all who have passed over the years and were pioneers in this great collectible coin-op hobby we love!!!! Steve Lojeski
