Chrome / Diamond front questions

Postby LotusGuy » Tue Mar 10, 2026 9:59 pm

I have this old Chrome / Diamond front machine. It started with lots of nasty rust and general deterioration. I've got the mech almost working (the payout slides are not getting pushed forward enough by the (replacement) push bar to let the 5th click lever hold the slides in place - any suggestions?)

I'm starting on the case. Did Mills paint the Chrome/Diamond front cases black? I prefer the stained wood look but I want it to be at least close to original.

My unit's serial number is 458546 as stamped on the base. The casting is chromed iron so I'm guessing it was pre-WWII? Is that about right?

The (replacement) push bar is too short for that machine. They use 2 diff. length push bars.

Thanks! I'm checking with the supplier I purchased the push bar from.

I restored two Mills Chrome Bells, and for those two customers, both cabinets were originally painted black. But I have seen Chrome Bells with stained wood cabinets, such as in the Mead/Geddes book "Slot Machines On Parade", and several at the Chicagoland shows over the years. So I think it's up to you, in which format you prefer for the finished machine.

Thank you!

It's looking like paint might be the only way to restore this cabinet.
