Calling All Pace Experts - Parts Question

Guys,

I need some help identifying a part (and its function) on a Pace Comet Fancy Front.

Take a look at the part pointed to by the red arrow in the attached photo. I am assuming from its construction that it is supposed to provide some type of damping function to the cycling of the mechanism (similar to what is done with the handle)?

If that is the case I don't see any adjustment mechanism like I find on a Mills handle pump. Having said that I don't see an adjustment mechanism on the handle pump on this Pace Comet either.

If this is suppose to be applying some damping function how can I adjust it or get it to do that? Right now it does not seem to be applying any back pressure at all.

Please set me straight here.

Per the Mead and Geddes "Owner's Pictorial Guide for the Care and Understanding of the Pace Bell slot machine, page 108, this is the escalator pump. That text says: "It cushions the advance motion of the coin conveyor by causing the escalator operating lever to return to the next rest position with a smooth, controlled stroke". See attached photo from the book. I"m not sure your pump can be adjusted, based on the linkage.

Thanks for the reply and very useful info. I don't have that particular Geddes book (this is my first Pace) but I should probably invest in one.

The escalator seems to move smoothly so maybe I don't need to worry about it. Since it doesn't appear to me to be doing any damping at all I am guessing that replacement is the only option? Was/is this unit filled with oil? Sounds like it would need to provide a much less damping effect than a handle pump......

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.

What I hear you saying is that for a home use machine the damping function is not necessary to protect the escalator, correct?

When mine rotates it does snap with some authority. I have read that Pace escalator parts are somewhat difficult to find and do vary over eras which increases the challenge of hunting down the appropriate parts if something breaks. But I think you are saying the escalator pump doesn't really help much in that regard.
