What you said abot the type of fastener would appear to correspond to the one I have as the serial number appears to put it in the 1935-36 age range and the ""pins" holding the strips onto the reels have "flat" tops (you've really done some detailed research on this subject, are you the one who got the Watling literature from the Watling family ???).

Mike,

I have gone through the literature and seen it all but sadly I don't own it. I never had a chance to buy it. It was given to another collector by the man who got it from the family. Thanks.

My machine is a Bird of Paradise w/ GA and Vender. I bought it from Larry DeBaugh. He told me the mech and case were the mech and case that were originally matched together. When he sent it to Jeff Frahm to restore for me it had tin GA strips but they weren't fortune GA reel strips. One of the reel strips was scratched up so he sent Jeff an original set of paper strips to replace them with. They are also GA but not fortune.
Oh well? :?

Marc,

Larry is a good friend and and an honest friend. It is always possible that the machine was ordered without fortune strips. Watling would do anything you wanted for a buck. They were frugal and just wanted to sell machines. Under normal circumstances they would put fortune strips on vending machines. The venders were a way to get around the gambling laws. The fortune strips just added to this. The majority of untouched original Watling machines found follow this rule.

That is what I thought and wasn't trying to insuate otherwise. My point was that if anyone knows about Watling its Larry and I was just trying to make the point that there were probably other options as you point out above.
