I don't think fortune strips are correct for a checkerboard.

No pictures provided of the back door.

Jackpot glass is not chicken wire glass.

Cash box is probably a replacement.

from what i see, other than obvious restoration at some point, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE FRONT CASTING, machine appears correct.
the case is the early style.
this style case is the first, then came the one with the fins / grooves, then the flat w/ black natural.
the checkerboard front casting would be from a later machine, (final version rol-a-top), with the flat sides.
fortune strips appear to be original.
cash box appears to be original, just missing the corbin lock.
hopefully my assessment is correct.
i am sure george will verify when he sees this post.

That's what I thought. Original first type of cabinet and the final front casing. It looks pieced together from a bunch of machines. Thanks!

It was an early American coin, vender front Rol-A-Top. Fortune strips are correct for this machine. It isn't pieced together, someone has replaced the lower front casting. I'm guessing it was done by an operator or revamper in the late 40's or'50's, to make the machine more current at the time. Watling offered cast iron inserts to convert your vender Rol-A-Top to a castle front. You had to ruin the vender to attach them. These machines show up ocassionally. That is not what this is, it has had the whole bottom casting rerplaced.

How hard/expensive is it to get an American coin front lower casting to switch it back?

Lower coin bottom won't make it right. It will still be screwed up. You have to put a vender bottom back on it to be correct and that is very hard to find. Especially one that is complete with the vender covers, doors, mint vender rod and trip linkage. The reason a coin bottom won't work is: The fortune telling reel strips will then be wrong. And you will have to drill an extra hole in the case on the handle side to mount a coin front casting as one of the mounting tangs on the handle is different from that of a vender. It was raised on a vender casting because the trip gear box was in the way. The checker board lower is a modified vender casting so they both interchange.
