Explain to me just how the reserve JP works...

Postby MoreBloodWine » Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:42 pm

Ok, so I got a mills hitop, and as I understand it the reserve is suppose to fill the JP on the next pull after a trip. Well, I don't really get how it works, by that I mean my JP trips next pull nothing happens other than quarters going into what I understand to be the reserve and getting stuck there until I tip the machine which is almost never so I effictively almost always have $2 - $3 out of play because theyre stuck in what I understand to be the RSV jackpot which doesnt appear to do anything.

Reserve jackpot

Postby TJ » Mon Aug 23, 2010 10:41 am

You must first determine you have in fact a complete jackpot. Because these neat devices were designed to reduce the operators having to service and fill jackpots, by the very nature of the little beasts they have many interacting parts. If any of these parts are missing, bent, jammed, misaligned, or installed backwards the reserve feature will be a great headache and of course won't work. Because of the problems associated with the reserve feature many retailers and restorers delete some or all of the parts involved. Your best bet if mechanically inclined would be to find one that works well and observe it, follow the instructions for loading and setting up of machine for operation. T.J.

Would you happen to have any pictures of a complete / fully functional JP system with a RSV ?

If anything and for arguments sake if worts comes to worst I can used a small dowel (sp?) rod to close off the top of the RSV where money gets stuck which wold leave the rest of the JP function but if I can get the RSV working then it would be worth it.

I would not however that the small door I know to be that of the RSV which drops funds on next pull doesnt seem to swing very much which is party of why I dont get how it works / drops funds on next pull after a trip. Now if I could only find a video of someone playing around with the JP then I'd be golden.

Reserve Jackpot

Postby watlingboy » Tue Aug 24, 2010 3:59 pm

When a jackpot is installed onto the casting, the reserve flap must fit into a notch on an arm that swings. Once the flap is put into the notch it must be held in place until the jackpot is flush against the glass. If you just mount the jackpot without holding the reserve flap in the notch, the arm will be in the wrong place. That little thing will keep the reserve from dumping. Over the years I have fixed numerous non working reserve jackpots just by removing the jackpot and putting that arm in the correct place. As mentioned, this is providing all parts are there and moving freely. Hope this helps.

I'm sort of doing self restoration on small parts, as for the JP. Assuming I have a complete one, I see the notch your talking about. Sorry for the bad pic but with the JP on the main plate it's hard to get a good angle.

But ya, so if I understand you right so long as the RSV flap is in that notch when against the glass and I have all the parts then on next pull after a JP trip the rsv should open and then close on what would be the third pull right ?

As it stands, last time I triped the machine what I understand to be the RSV had quarters stuck in it probably from not being set right which I didnt know at the time.

Edit: I dont even get how it really works seeing as how the RSV door doesnt seem to swing very far but it may just have been because of the way I was messing with it / the parts not being in the right position.

I would still ove to see a pic of a working RSV and how far the "door" swings when working right. I only say that because the gap doesnt seem to be very big for money to drop.

New Pic: The green is the JP and red is where quarters are always getting stuck and to what I understand to be the RSV. I have the lid in the notch and tripped it by hand and the RSV door doesnt seem to swing at all let alone budge n inch. Would this be becaause it's not hooked to the mech in the case ?

Go to http://www.ibuyoldslots.com/dvd/ and click on the jackpot video. You might get enough information from this excerpt to get what you need.

Didnt really help but thx, what I'm really interested in seeing is how the RSV works. I get the basic idea of it but fail to see how the RSV door drops back far enough to drop whatever coinds get stuck in it. Ok, my main issue before may have been that it just wast latched right which I don't believe it was or I may even be missing parts from it, but lets for a minute assume I have a complete system with RSV pieces. Manually tripping the jackpot and moving whatever pieces I can doesnt seem to swing the RSV door back to drop its load.

The reserve jackpot on a mills machine is fairly tricky. Several levers and latches which are all interconnected are required to make it work.

The slot machine restoration DVD set that I sell has a very detailed section on the jackpot.

I normally don't break up the set but if you want to purchase just the DVD which covers the jackpot I would be willing to do that. The price would be $24.95 and that includes shipping and handling.

If you are interested then send me a private message via this forum.

I dont have the money for it right now or I would most likely take you up on the offer. Now this may seem like a half assed question given what you said about the DVD but does it specifically show how the RSV JP works including on just how the "door" moves.

I know most people would just say I'm being insane but I honestly don't see / get how the door can swing far enough to drop the RSV contents.

On a similar note, how many pieces should the JP system with RSV have including springs and screws.

Actually, I just had a somewhat interesting idea. Last you mentioned it you said you could do some minor work on machines but not the whole shabang because of time constraints or something. If I mailed you my JP system could you do a "free" estimate on it to let me know what I'm missing, if anything and what it would cost to replace said parts but also include the price of a full detailing to it so it would be as close to new as possible ?

Edit: On an unrelated note, why doesnt the img tags seem to work for me ?

I even tried image instead of img and nothing...
